A Conversation About Hope

January 12, 2021

Zoominar

Meet the director and screenwriter of Norway’s 2021 official submission for the International Feature Film category at the 2021 Oscars®, Maria Sødahl.

Returning from a nine-year hiatus from filmmaking, Maria Sødahl brings us the highly personal, emotionally devastating Hope, Norway’s official submission to the 93rd Academy Awards’ International Feature Film category. Based on the real experiences of director Sødahl, Hope follows decorated choreographer and beloved mother, Anja, and her family following her terminal cancer diagnosis. Showcasing beautiful performances by Andrea Bræin Hovig and Stellan Skarsgård, Sødahl’s drama takes an intimate look at this traumatic scenario, giving life to the relationships and desires of her characters. With intelligent writing and undeniable acting performances, Hope is a sensitive, heartful ode to family and life itself, reminding audiences there is so much more to living than waiting to die.

Our discussion with Maria also included Ric Robertson, former COO of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (The Oscars®), and Norway’s Consul General in San Francisco, Jo Sletbak.

Vikings vs. Wolves - The Battle of Finance

The world of finance is at a crossroad. It is short-term traders versus long-term investors. Greed versus responsibility. Artificial intelligence versus human minds. For decades, the financial industry has been dominated by "wolves" seeking short-term personal gains. This has led to a destructive financial system, that has harmed millions of people. The world is faced with unprecedented problems: Food and water shortage. The effects of climate change. Mass migration and instability. Democratic values are under pressure. This far, finance has been seen as part of the problem. But can it be part of the solution? As the most powerful tool available to us, finance has the potential to fundamentally change society. As the world largest state-owned fund, The Norwegian Oil Fund is owned by a people and governed by politicians. It is a fund for future generations with ethical guidelines. It owns 1.5% of the worlds stocks and has ownership in 9000 companies worldwide. Instead of being part of the quarterly tyranny of regular businesses, this fund is politically mandated to see decades ahead. The fund has to address the coming challenges, but can - or will - the Oil Fund make a difference? —NordicStories

Laemmle Santa Monica Theatre

On October 10, 2019, NorCham Los Angeles held an exclusive screening of this documentary about the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund, including a Q&A with its director, Fredrik Horn Akselsen and Finland’s Consul General in Los Angeles, Stefan Lindstrom.

Thank you to producer Rune H. Trondsen of Nordic Stories for letting us make the documentary available to our members.

The Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund (NBIM), worth approx. $1 trillion, was built largely on Norway's revenue from the oil industry. The aim of the so-called oil fund is to ensure responsible and long-term management of revenue from Norway’s oil and gas resources in the North Sea so that this wealth benefits both current and future generations.
The fund’s formal name is the Government Pension Fund Global.

The makers of this documentary were allowed to follow several individuals from NBIM, a fund that invests with a generational perspective.
This investment style is contrasted with short-term focused investors and high-speed traders.
Concurrently, the film addresses how climate change, unequal access to resources and wealth gaps are straining society, as these are factors that also need to be considered by all investors.
