Returning from a nine-year hiatus from filmmaking, Maria Sødahl brings us the highly personal, emotionally devastating Hope, Norway’s official submission to the 93rd Academy Awards’ International Feature Film category. Based on the real experiences of director Sødahl, Hope follows decorated choreographer and beloved mother, Anja, and her family following her terminal cancer diagnosis. Showcasing beautiful performances by Andrea Bræin Hovig and Stellan Skarsgård, Sødahl’s drama takes an intimate look at this traumatic scenario, giving life to the relationships and desires of her characters. With intelligent writing and undeniable acting performances, Hope is a sensitive, heartful ode to family and life itself, reminding audiences there is so much more to living than waiting to die.
Synopsis: Anja lives with Tomas in a large family of biological children and stepchildren. For a number of years, the two adults have grown independent of each other, with creative jobs in parallel worlds. When Anja gets a terminal cancer diagnosis, their modern life breaks down and exposes neglected love. Alone with her grief and her fears, Anja realizes that she needs Tomas’ full help and support. It’s their only chance. How else will their children find the strength once she is gone, if their parents are unable to weather the storm together?
